"Appartment": Smart Movie Review - - Lacking Originality, Another Hollywood Remake Can't Thrill Anyone

Mumbai: Here comes another Hollywood remake, which looks like a poor version of the original. The film, ‘Apartment’ underscores the fact that our Bollywood filmmakers are seriously lacking in originality. Although, a Hollywood rip-off seldom works at the Box Office, there is still no improvement in the mind-set of the filmmakers. The film is an unabashed remake of 1992 Hollywood hit ‘Single White Female’.

The film attempts to be a thriller but fails to thrill anyone. The story revolves around an airhostess Preeti (Tanushree Dutta), who is into a live-in relationship with her boyfriend Karan (Rohit Roy). But one day she feels that Karan is being unfaithful to her, so she chucks him out of the apartment. But paying the monthly instalment for the apartment becomes difficult for her, so she takes in Neha Bharadwaj (Neetu Chandra).

Neha is a coy small-town girl and she strikes a cordial relationship with Preeti. They have a nice time together. But things turn queer when Karan returns in Preeti’s life. Neha doesn’t like it and shocking incidents start taking place in Preeti’s life. Neha tries to stop Karan from patching up with Preeti and things start going out of hand.

Director Jagmohan Mundhra seems to be sending out the message that urban professionals should be wary of sharing houses with strangers but the message is very vague. For a change, Tanushree Dutta has done her part well and so has Neetu Chandra. But Rohit Roy remains wooden. Camerawork is average and the film literally crawls in some sequences. Bappi Lahiri’s music is average but background score is good.
