This year is going to ring in a new wave of charity options when it comes to the Halloween season thanks to the new and improved UNICEF Trick-or-Treat Box. It has officially received a high-tech upgrade via an embedded Microsoft chip that allows potential donators to give even more online than they traditionally do through the availability of loose change around the house.

The idea behind this hi-tech UNICEF Trick-or-Treat Box came from a Microsoft and PSFK-sponsored study that looked at ways to increase fundraising using mobile technology. Although UNICEF is still working out all the kinks, the basic concept is pretty much in place: Users scan the Microsoft Tag on the side of the boxes with their cell phones, which brings them to a special website featuring activities for kids as well as educational information about where UNICEF’s dollars are going. The option to donate more will also be on the website.
