iPhone, iPad track users' personal data

Researchers have discovered a file on the Apple iPhone and iPad that reportedly saves every detail of its owner's movements.

The data file in the mobile 3G devices is then copied to the user's computer during synchronisation, reports The Guardian.

"Apple has made it possible for almost anybody - a jealous spouse, a private detective - with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you've been," said security researcher Pete Warden.

The file details the latitude and longitude of the phone's recorded co-ordinates. It also records a timestamp, revealing where the phone was at different times of the day.

The recording file was thought to be issued in June 2010 with Apple's iOS 4 update to the phone's operating system.

"This is a worrying discovery. Location is one of the most sensitive elements in anyone's life - just think where people go in the evening," said Simon Davies of Privacy International.

Davies added: "The existence of that data creates a real threat to privacy. The absence of notice to users or any control option can only stem from an ignorance about privacy at the design stage."

The iPhone is thought to be the only mobile phone that tracks its owner's movements and data with such a file.

Warden and fellow data scientist Alasdair Allan investigated Google's Android phone and did not find a similar tracking code. The researchers are to present their findings on Wednesday at the Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

"We haven't come across any instances of other phone manufacturers doing this," said Allen.

The file apparently moves to new devices when the owner replaces or upgrades their iPhone. It also records data whether or not the user agrees to allow their data to be tracked.

"The fact that [the file] is transferred across [to a new iPhone or iPad] when you migrate is evidence that the data-gathering isn't accidental," Allen added.

Warden and Allan launched the iPhone Tracker information website to answer consumer questions about their discovery. The site also offers a downloadable application that will display the data the iPhone is recording.

iPhone Photo Printer - - Crystal-clear Printouts Direct from Your iPhone

Seeing as the quality of photos that come out of newer smartphones are pretty decent, it makes pretty good sense that we use them to take a good portion of our photos. Holidays, birthdays, and special events have all amassed in photo form onto your device, and unless printed, will stay there forever. Sure, you can transfer photos to your computer and turn out some copies, but wouldn’t it be easier if there were a printer just for your phone?

The iPhone Photo Printer has a $159.99 price tag, but prints out crystal-clear 300 dpi resolution photos. The vibrant colors you will find in these photos are thanks to some patented paper that has yellow, magenta, and cyan dye crystals embedded within it. Each purchase is accompanied with a pack of paper that will give you about a dozen prints that are smudge-, tear-, and fade-proof, as well as water resistant. For those of you that own an Android-powered device, you will be happy to know that this will play nice with your phone as well.

Official Release Date Announced for iPhone 4 at Verizon After End of 4-years Exclusive Agreement With AT&T

After many months of speculation, Verizon has now announced the Verizon iPhone 4. The launch of the iPhone on Verizon marks the end of the almost 4 year exclusivity agreement that Apple had with AT&T.

As for the release date, expect it as early as February.

The iPhone going to the Verizon network has been in testing for about a year now and is capable of connecting to the CDMA network. All the features are practically the same such as FaceTime availability, the Retina Display as well as the insides. The only main difference is the way it connects up, ie its CDMA technology inside.

So that Verizon can handle the network load the smartphone will bring to it, they have increased network capacity.

A few questions have been asked such as why they don't use LTE technology. Using LTE chips required small design changes to the phone which Apple didn't want to make. Using LTE would make the roll out longer, so CDMA was opted for on this version of the iPhone.

Expect to hear the exact release date and pricing revealed in the next few days, perhaps weeks.

“Gimme Power”: Unique iPhone Docking Station - - Hand-shaped Sculpture Designed by York Street Studio

Gadget chargers are usually characterized by ugly plugs and messy wires. The hyper hyped iPhone have seen a plethora of applications and docking stations but this kickass “Gimme Power” charger has surprised me. The uber stylish and yet functional device is shaped like a hand and gives one an impression that the hand itself is gawking at one of the Apple’s most roaring creation.

Crafted from Ceramic, this wasn’t intended to be a gadget in the first place rather just a sculpture designed by York Street Studio. The design firm is known for carving almost everything from leather-trimmed bathtubs to square brass doorknobs and thereby unleashes an element of surprise in everyday lives. It was the firm’s owner’s daughter who wished to bring some technology to this piece and the result as “Gimme Power” docking station for iPhone and iPod.

The unique docking station is available in choices of white and silver finish. The makers suggest that they are working on other color options too. They also believe that since messy cords and sockets are out of the picture here, the hand-alike gadget will also serve as an eye-catching paperweight. It’s a little pricey for $180, but that’s the premium one needs to pay for the offbeat design.

Futuristic Apple iPhone 5 Might Come With Remote Computing Tool With the Help of Near Field Communication (NFC) Chip

Apple Inc. the maker of the insanely famous and perhaps the most cherished smartphone in the world, Apple iPhone series is back in the rumor realm again as numerous reports now indicate that, the company could very well be working on the next generation smartphone, iPhone 5. With the phenomenal success achieved by iPhone 4G that was released this year, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple is in fact working on a new iPhone variant. However, what does comes as a big news is the fact that, Apple could also be looking to make the iPhone 5 a remote computing tool, with the help of Near Field Communication (NFC) chip, that the company is expected to put into the new iPhone.

Near Field Communication is essentially a wireless connectivity protocol, that would enable the users to carry their Mac desktop data and settings and would then be able to transfer this data on to another Mac. The synchronization will make the Mac take load and run all the applications and will run as per the settings synced. To achieve the NFC sync, the users will be required to be in close proximity of the Mac and once the connection is closed or severed, the computer will revert back to its original settings. The data that can synchronized with the Mac includes, Address books, desktop pictures, keyboard and mouse settings, as well as bookmarks and password management for websites.

Europe: The Latest Victim of iPhone Alarm Bug - - Still to Be Fixed by Apple

The clocks went back here in the UK on Sunday morning, and if you own an iPhone and were expecting to wake up on time this morning, you may have noticed your iPhone alarm going off an hour later.

The same problem affected iPhone users in Australia last month, and Apple still hasn’t rolled out an update to fix it, so the fix will probably come in ios 4.2 which is due out later this month.

If you had the problem this morning and were late for work, there is a fix for it, unless you want to use the same excuse tomorrow. You will need to delete your alarms and set new ones, or you can set the existing alarms to wake you up one hour earlier, just don’t forget to set it back when Apple release a fix.
